SPRING CHINOOK on the Rogue River
There is probably no better fighting or eating fish than the Spring Chinook Salmon. These chrome bright, also known as, “Springers” return from the ocean from mid-April through the end of June.
In April and May, on the lower part of the river, we anchor our jetboat alongside the river and wait for schools of these 12-30# scrappers to arrive. We may try several spots in a day or stick with our best known spot all day. Anchovies and spinners seem to work best.
As these “Springers” arrive near their spawning beds, 120-150 miles up river, near Medford, we prefer using our drift boats. To entice these powerful tug-a-war specialists, we either back-bounce bait or back-troll large plugs in the deepest holes and bedrock slots. Fishing continues through July on the upper Rogue for these delectable trophies.
